One of the things I appreciate about Drawing Strength from the Names of God is that it is not long nor does it take a Masters degree in theology to understand. This book is for God’s children who cry out His name … in whatever form they need to cry out … and are met by Him, in all his goodness and loveliness. It makes a great gift book, yes … but more so it is a wonderful be still and know book. Catherine Martin has presented us with another great work!

Martin wrote a terrific Bible study called Trusting in the Names of God – A Quiet Time Experience, and this is a companion volume filled with stunning natural photography. Each chapter is just a few pages long and focuses on a name of God like Yahweh Rophe, El Ro’i, and Abba. Martin offers personal insight to help readers to connect and understand this aspect of the Lord, along with Bible verses relating to it. She finishes each chapter with a short prayer to God using the chapter’s name. For such a slim volume, Martin manages to give readers both fresh insight as well as hope in our Lord. The photography is spectacular views of the best of God’s creation. This hardcover book would make a terrific gift for anyone in need of a new look at God.

At first glance I thought Drawing Strength from the Names of God was a beautiful coffee table book, but when I began reading it I realized it deserved to be on my kitchen counter or nightstand. The book blends excerpts from Catherine Martin’s book Trusting in the Names of God – A 30-Day Journey with stunning photographs of God’s handiwork in nature. Catherine invites readers to find guidance from Yahweh R’oi the Shepherd, peace in Yahweh Shalom and provision from Yahweh Jireh. Scripture verses fill the book, making it powerful and relevant, yet accessible in small doses. I like to read a page while I wait for my tea kettle to boil in the morning, and it’s perfect for end-of-day meditations, too. This book is a refreshing gift for a new mother, a study leader, or anyone who needs encouragement.
