I was up quite early and I decided to grab a cup of coffee at St*rb*cks. I drove along the street in my neighborhood gazing to the east at the mammoth Mt. San Jacinto, at the western end of the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs, CA. What I saw took my breath away. The setting moon was spectacularly bright and hanging low in the sky.
I made an immediate U-turn and raced back to my house to get my camera. Coffee would have to wait. I decided to take all three cameras — my Nikon D810, Sony A6000, Fuji XT-2 and my trusty Gitzo tripod.
I drove as quickly as I could to my favorite place for shooting landscapes to the west in the desert. I didn't know how much time I would have before the moon slipped behind the mountain. I set up my tripod with my Nikon D810. The other two cameras were over my shoulders, ready to capture different views of the moon as it set.
Oh, what a time I had. It only lasted twenty minutes, then the whole view was gone. This is one of my favorite images with the moon hanging low, about to slip away from my view.
As I was out there with God watching His work in the heavens, I couldn't help but think about the words of Psalm 19 —
The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.
Psalm 19:1-4 NLT
That moon was a grand proclamation of God's glory. Out there in the desert, I was watching a display of God's craftsmanship.
When we witness God's handiwork in creation, we are encouraged to trust Him for His work in our lives. I know that if God can create such a display of glory in the sky with that setting moon, then He has something in mind as He works in my life, even in the most difficult circumstances.
So today, dear friend, go out and look up at God's craftsmanship in the sky and be encouraged to trust God for all you face today.
Dear Lord, thank You for the continual display of Your glory, day after day. Help us to trust You today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
