The Edge Of Faith

A Walk In Grace

Sometimes in life you find yourself faced with a radical choice. I call it radical because it seems to go against all things sensible, all things visible, and transforms you into the realm of the impossible and the invisible.

You ask yourself these questions, "Am I going to live by what I see with the naked eye? Is that even reality? Or am I going to live by what God says in His Word? And am I going to trust God to keep His promises even though I can't see how it will all work out?"

This is the moment that I call the edge of faith. Mrs. Charles Cowman calls it "pure faith" in her Streams in the Desert devotional. Here is what she says —

Never should we so abandon ourselves to God as when He seems to have abandoned us. Let us enjoy light and consolation when it is His pleasure to give it to us, but let us not attach ourselves to His gifts, but to Himself; and when He plunges us into the night of pure faith, let us still press on through the agonizing darkness.

We must, in these moments, abandon ourselves to God, as Mrs. Charles Cowman encourages. That is the moment of pure faith where we launch out on the great waters of impossibilities where God does mighty things for His glory. We simply fly above the circumstances wholly trusting in the promises of God rather than sinking under the weight of many problems.

With Quiet Time Ministries' myPhotoWalk Devotional Photography, and with the wonderful financial help of myPhotoWalk Photo Shoot Sponsors, I have the glorious opportunity to capture images of God's creation and publish them to the world (Psalm 19:1 NKJV). I love this image of a green heron I captured at the very moment it was ready to fly. I pray we will be like this bird, ready to fly, wholly trusting in God's Word.

Charles Spurgeon encourages us —

Nothing will happen that God has not foreseen. No unexpected event will destroy His plans. No emergency will transpire for which He has not provided. No peril will occur against which He has not guarded. No remarkable need will take Him by surprise. He declares the end from the beginning, from ancient times things that are not yet done (Is. 46:10). God fills His own eternal now. He sees everything, the past, the present, the future. All, all, all of the future is foreseen and fixed by Him. Derive great comfort from this fact…He who is at the helm is Master of every wind that blows and of every wave that breaks its force on the ship. He foresees both the events that will happen at the destination and those at the starting port. He knows every wave, its height, width, and force. He knows every wind in all its connections. We are safe with a Captain who has fore–arranged and foreordained all things from the beginning to the end. It is to our advantage to put implicit confidence in His guidance.

Charles Spurgeon in Beside Still Waters

Paul encourages us that "we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7). Those are words to remember and live by every moment of the day. May we be so filled with God's promises in His Word that we remember what is true when the fog of life rolls in. Then the invisible will become visible to our spiritual sight and at the edge of our faith we will take flight above it all.

I love this prayer by Herbert Booth and it is ours today —

"Oh, for faith that brings the triumph when defeat seems strangely near! Oh, for faith that brings the triumph into victory's ringing cheer—Faith triumphant; knowing not defeat or fear. In Jesus' name, Amen."
