Seeing In The Dark

A Walk In Grace

How is your night vision these days? We have recently been visited by a surprise guest in our backyard palm trees — a great horned owl.

Owls are known to have excellent vision at night. They have large eyes and are able to let in more light. Their pupils are big, allowing them to see well at night. Inside their eyes are structures called rods that are sensitive to the light. Owls have 35-100 more rods than humans, so they are able to see better in dim light. Owls hunt their prey at night, so being able to see in the dark is imperative for them to survive.

We need to take a lesson from the owls. There are times in life when it seems as though we are walking in the dark. We can't see what God is doing and we may wonder where God is.

The prophet Isaiah felt like this when he said —

Truly you are a God who has been hiding himself, the God and Savior of Israel.

Isaiah 45:15 NIV

There are times when it seems that God is hidden and all is dark. It's imperative for us to have good "night vision" like the owls. So how is it that you can see in the dark?

Trust in the Lord. Put your faith in who God is, what He does, and what He says in His Word, and you will develop spiritual eyes through the power of the Holy Spirit, and you will be able to stand strong in the dark nights of the soul.

Isaiah learned this same lesson. He wrote —

Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on their God.

Isaiah 50:10 NIV

So, dear friend, grow your spiritual night vision by living in God's Word, drawing near to God, relying on God's power through His Spirit, knowing Him better, and trusting Him more.

"Dear Lord, Thank You for giving us the ability through Your word, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, to trust in You and see in the dark. In Jesus' name, Amen."
